The theme of GeoCymru 2024 was ‘The Future of Geospatial’. The focus of the conference was the exploration of the potential of technology for delivering services to support location-based decision making, looking at innovation with both existing and emerging technologies.
The presentations were kicked off by our Platinum sponsor Esri, who covered the topic of environmental digital twins. Highlighting that there is a large diversity and richness of environmental data already available for anyone to, from services like DataMapWales, build their own environmental digital twin and visualise and interact with that data in a 3d space.
Trends from discussions throughout the day included observations on the abundance of data available and the importance of using open standards, the importance of digital twins, the need for more collaboration, dealing with data debt and how the application of machine learning and AI is further blurring the line between data scientist and GIS specialist.
Innovative applications of AI/machine learning were demonstrated, as was the application of of UAVs.
